Born in the château de Ravel, Auvergne, Jean-Baptiste, count d' Estaing, after having served in the Indies and being named vice admiral of the "Asian and African oceans" (1777), fought in the American War of Independence. During that conflict, he was defeated by the British at Newport, Rhode Island, but he then besieged the British post at Grenada (1779). Commander of the National Guard (1789), he was promoted to admiral (1792) and, at the time of the revolution of 1789, was arrested during the Terror and executed, despite his republican beliefs.
